This Cape Winelands accommodation service is locally owned and operated by Winelands Experience and their dedicated team based in Franschhoek. Avid Wine Country fans, we can give you local knowledge and help you to plan a unique Cape Winelands tour and much more.

As the historical home of the South African wine industry, the Winelands has been producing fine wine since the 17th century. There are many top quality wine cellars hidden within the Winelands, many of which also have fine Cape restaurants where you can enjoy the best of wining and dining.

The Cape Winelands Region also has a lot more to offer than just fine wine and food. It has some of the most magnificent mountains in South Africa and the world. They are best seen by hiking the magnificent paths through the region or driving the scenic routes and passes, with amazing panoramas of the Cape Fold Mountains. For the civil engineer and historian, the history of the construction of these passes is incredible; they were initially built to enable the early pioneers access to the Koisan people, with whom they wanted to establish cattle trading practices in order for the ships that entered Cape Town harbour to replenish their food and repair their ships.

To fully capture all of its history and culture, the Cape Winelands is an ideal base for your South Africa holiday. A 100-km radius from a base like Franschhoek, the gourmet capital of South Africa, gives access to the natural world of The Cape Winelands Biosphere. For the nature lover this is heaven on earth. The region is the world’s smallest floral kingdom, making up only 0.04% of the world's land mass, and yet it houses more plant species than the entire United Kingdom. For the geologist, the Cape Fold Mountains hold interest, and bird lovers may discover some endemic species not seen anywhere else in the world.

The Mother City, Cape Town, is a short drive away. The city has something to offer everyone, whether it is a visit to the top of one of the oldest mountains in the world, Table Mountain; a memorable visit to Robben Island, the former prison home of Nelson Mandela; or a picnic at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, internationally acclaimed as one of the great botanical gardens of the world.

Accommodation has been carefully chosen by the team to appeal to the independent traveler. Our guest houses and hotels in the Cape Winelands are not only competitively priced but are also a little different, away from the tour groups and yet central and unique. So, make your choice from the available list of guest houses. Although we of course feature Guest Houses in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, we also have the more far flung areas covered as well. So get in touch and we will take care of the rest.

To see just what is available in detail, click on the Cape Winelands Tours and Activities tab above. Or contact us directly, and we'll help you to plan your Cape Winelands holiday from scratch.

4 Mountain Pass Tour

From: ZAR 700 / person
(assuming 2 travellers)

There are over 30 Mountain Passes in the Cape Region. They were built originally by the early settlers to provide access to farming land as well as to the indigenous Khoi herders who traded cattle. Over the years these passes have been improved for the wagons that took the early settled to pastures new. Then came the railways and more recently the road transport vehicles.

These passes now provide some of the most spectacular scenery as well as superb examples of the Cape Fold Mountains; sometimes looking more like a Roman arch.   Whether you’re an engineer, a geologist or just enjoy fantastic scenery a day out travelling over 3 or 4 passes is an experience not to be missed.

Winelands Experience has put together a number of different routes that can be mixed & matched to meet the clients personal requirements. A straight forward mountain Pass drive or include the route in a Vineyard wine or Brandy experience. Alternatively we can take a trip down the R60 & 62 out to Barrydale. If you feel like a night away then we can go for an overnight stopover in Oudtshoorn.

This is one of those mountain pass tours.
