South Africa has a number of luxury train services running from Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Port Elizabeth. They are an excellent option for travel to the Cape if you are not in a hurry. If you have a car, you can put it on the train for the longer trips, if you so wish. Two train services are Blue Train and Premier Class; Blue Train for a top-end journey, and Premier class for a more economical ride. Both are train services second to none. Adding rail journey to Victoria Falls is another option during your South Africa holiday. There are 2 long-distance rail services that operate out of Cape Town. One runs from Durban (via Pietermaritzburg, Bloemfontein and Kimberley) weekly, and the other is a daily operation to Johannesburg (via Kimberley). Please contact us if you would like your South African Tour itinerary to include a train journey.
Getting Around Cape Winelands
By train
At the day-to-day service level in Cape Town, Metrorail offers a very cheap service. However, like most city transport thorough out the world, we strongly recommend you do not travel on late night trains. We also recommend travelling first class, as it is inexpensive.
By car:
The most popular way to travel around the Western Cape and other parts of South Africa is by car. Self hired cars are easily available. Chauffeurs are also relatively inexpensive, and using a local chauffeur service is very good value for money. Some tour companies allow you to combine the two with options to hire a chaueffeur when needed. This allows you the pleasure of looking at the beautiful scenery instead of the road. It is also invaluable if you want to take a scenic wine drive around the vineyards of the Cape Winelands Region. Please remember never to drink and drive.
If you stay in Cape Town for a few days, taxis are the most popular means of transport. All taxis have the rates painted on the door in R/km. For a sightseeing experience, there are City Bus Tours. Buy a ticked that allows you to Hop On - Hop Off for 24 hrs. There are 2 routes to choose from and different price structures depending on the routes you want access to.
